What is a Mud Client?
A MUD client is a program designed to supplement and streamline telnet. It allows you to easily connect to various MUDs and to make game play and communication much simpler. Some useful time-saving features found in many clients are scripts, triggers, and aliases.
Scripts are used to store important information, like the MUD's address and your password, to allow you to connect to the MUD almost effortlessly. Triggers can be set to watch for a phrase from the computer and the client will respond even before you realize it. For example, assuming you are in a fight with Magog the crimson bastard and he has "disarmed you!", your client, picking up the words "disarmed you!" will automatically send "get sword" or whatever you set the trigger to be.
Aliases (and/or macros) are a type of non-automatic trigger that you assign to perform a special function. Assuming that you do not want to wait until you are starving to eat (and thus would not set a trigger to the words "You are hungry"), you could set an alias to type "get food from backpack [enter] eat food [enter]" just by typing "eat".
As you can see, the variations are endless. Another thing most clients can do, is to seperate what you type from what data you get from the mud. This way, if you are typing something and something happens on the MUD, you won't lose track of where you were in your typing.
